Grading

Hardwood flooring grades vary from species to species, but there is a universally accepted, general definition of grades which is as follows:

Select:
This is the highest grade and comes mostly from the heart of the tree with uniform, parallel grain and minimual knots or uneven character.

Number 1:
This grade is also uniform in appearance but may contain characteristics such as wider color variations or small knots. Depending on the species, it also may contain more traces of sapwood, the lighter band of wood closer to the perimeter of the trunk.

Number 2:
This grade will exhibit significant color variations and more character or knots.
